My Top 10 Characters with Wasted Potential Updated

Description

A lot of the time, the coolest characters in fiction are treated the most poorly. Here are my top 10 characters, with wasted potential. Keep in mind that these are my opinion.

UPDATE: I've been doing some thinking and decided to update this meme.

Here is the link to the blank if you want to do your own:

#10 General Grievous (Revenge of the Sith) - For everyone who saw the 2003 Clone Wars cartoon, they saw how much of a boss Grievous was. In the cartoon Grievous was shown to be this awesome Jedi slayer with moves that could rival Samurai Jack. In the movie (and the 2008 cartoon) Grievous is shown to be a coward and poor combatant. The reason he’s so low on the list is because he’s still cool in the movie and series.

#9 Venom (Spider-man 3) - Many Spider-man fans were excited to see Venom on the big screen in the original movie trilogy. Sadly, Venom only appears at the very end of the movie and his appearance is weakened by his character’s poor development in the film. Not only that but his appearance was altered from the trailers and promotional images to make him less scary to kids, despite the fact that the movie is PG-13. There also were several important scenes cut from the movie, including a scene where Venom offered Sandman the money he needed for his daughter’s medicine which would make their partnership more plausible. While I still enjoy Spider-man 3 and even what we got from Venom in it, it sucks that we could’ve gotten more.

#8 Tripredacus Council (Beast Wars) - The Tripredacus Council is probably the most mysterious group of characters in Transformers. They were only seen in a few episodes of Beast Wars and it was rumored they were descendants of Unicron and were revealed to combine into a giant Transformer as well as had their own secret agenda. Unfortunately, when Beast wars ended and it’s sequel series began the Tripredacus Council were written out of the series. They could’ve easily been made the main villains of the sequel series. Thankfully, they did have a large role in the comics.

#7 Rowan North (Ghostbusters 2016) - Ghostbusters 2016/Answer the Call did miss out on some great opportunities but one of the problems was how the villain was handled. Rowan is just a man who’s been bullied all his life and wants to destroy the world with the power of ghosts, which is a step down from the villains of the previous films. He later commits suicide and becomes a ghost and gains the power to possess people and change into a cartoon or a kaiju sized monster(how he got this power is never explained). Unfortunately the way he’s handled in the movie is very poorly, even his ultimate defeat is disappointing. They tried to make him a sympathetic and goofy character but hardly managed to either. Sony could’ve done a way better job with his character, they could’ve had him lost a loved one and is trying to bring them back through the ghost world and still make him a funny villain.

On a side note, there is a character called Rowan in the Ghostbusters comics (which also features Women Ghostbusters) who is a magician and could’ve made a much more imposing & interesting threat to the team.

#6 Professor Proton/Arthur Jeffries (The Big Bang Theory) - For me, Professor Proton was one of the best guest stars and later recurring characters on the Big Bang Theory. Unlike other characters, Sheldon looked up to him and annoyed him with love not being condescending. Sadly, he was killed off after a few episodes since his debut. I feel like there was so much more they could’ve done with him since he was such a good character, especially since half of the main cast hadn’t even met him.

#5 E-123 (Sonic the Hedgehog) - This isn’t the first time I’ve talked about Omega. As many know, he wasn’t as cool as he was in Sonic Next Gen/06 as compared to how he was in Sonic Heroes. Since his last playable appearance was in the glitchy mess, it left a bad impression of his character since his gameplay was so limited and broken (also his voice was vastly different from his original). To make matters worse, in Sonic Generations he wasn’t even included as a part of the story despite the fact that characters like Cream the Rabbit was. Hopefully if we someday get a new Adventure game, Omega will be one of the playable characters.

#4 Lewis Dodgson (Jurassic Park franchise) - At first glance Dodgson may seem like a typical corporate vulture looking to make a quick buck, but there’s actually more to him than what was shown in the movie. In the novelization of The Lost World, Dodgson was the main villain not Hammond’s nephew. Not only that but he was a monster in the book, he threw Sarah Harding off a fishing boat in open water and later tried to feed her to a mother T-Rex. Strangely, despite playing such a large role in the series, he’s never returned to play the role on the big screen. In Jurassic World, Biosyn (the company Dodgson works for) could’ve easily been the founders of the new park since it’d make sense that the world would be against Ingen at this point, but instead we got another Ingen plot. On a plus side I hear he's back in the new Jurassic movie and makes a cameo in the Netflix series.

#3 Everyone (Mighty No. 9) - I must admit that I was not one of the backers for Mighty No. 9, but I know the game could’ve been alot better than what was given to the fans (but by now everyone knows the story of what happened). I also like alot of the characters in the game like Beck, Brandish, Ray, and Countershade (who’s voiced by legendary VA Steve Blum) to name a few. all of them seem very unique in their own way, even if some are copies of Megaman characters. Sadly, since the game did so poorly all plans for a sequel are out the window, and what sucks the most is that the game ended on a cliffhanger so we’ll never know what happens to them and the world they’re in.

#2 Shockwave (Transformers: Dark of the Moon) - There have been many Transformers in the Michael Bay movies with wasted potential, but probably the most notable is Shockwave. Throughout the franchise, Shockwave has been known as the Decepticon's mad scientist and fearsome warrior. Fans were thrilled to hear that he'd not only be in the third film but, also stated to be the main villain of it which was further evidenced by several pieces of merchandise to feature him (even having a line of cupcakes after him). This however was just a ruse to hide the true main villain, while this was clever it could've been executed better. Shockwave in fact barely had any role in the
movie and could probably be cut out, roughly about 5 minutes of screentime and only 2 lines of dialogue in the 2 and a half hour movie (the human villain actually had more screentime than him). This is made worse by the fact that he wasn't even at the Decepticon meeting in Africa and doesn't even interact with any other Decepticon. Also he doesn't even transform in the movie and relies on his pet Driller, and yes he does have an alt. form even though it's not seen in the movie he can transform into a Cybertronian tank.
I am pleased to say that his return in the Bumblebee movie was amazing and I look forward to wait future installments bring.

#1 Finn (Star Wars) - Finally our number one spot (which was originally Shockwave). After seeing The Force Awakens I had high expectations for what was to come in the sequel trilogy. Most notably was Finn who out of all the new characters, was the most unique and interesting. A rogue Stormtrooper whose eyes were open to the tyranny of the First Order, skilled with a lightsaber and openly defied not only his commanding officer but even Kylo Ren. There were so many possibilities they could've taken with this character but instead he got pushed to the sidelines in favor of a new character named Rose. And if that wasn't bad enough, there was a deleted storyline in Episode 9 where he would've led a rebellion of rogue troopers like himself on Courascant but instead it got scrapped for "REY!!!" There's more things that I haven't even mentioned but I don't want to ramble more than I have. But for as poorly used as Finn was he was one of the few highlights of the sequels, I just wish we could've seen more of him especially since the new Star Wars was meant for a new generation.

Honorable Mentions:

The Lizard (Spider-man No Way Home) - It was great having Rhys Ifans back as Curt Connors but I wish we could've seen more of him in the movie. I'd love for him to return in the MCU.

Stasrscream (Transformers: Dark of the Moon) - He might be a wimp, but not even Starscream deserves to be defeated by Sam Witwicky. The movies did him and several other characters so badly.

Vicious (Pokemon 4ever) - After seeing Suede’s review of the movie on Youtube, I agree that there could’ve been a lot more done with his character besides just wanting to take over the world.
